Maryland’s candidate filing deadline is 9 p.m. Tuesday, so barring any last minute entrants the shape of state and local races is set.

The top of the ticket in Montgomery County is the contest for county executive. Three high-profile County Council members are jockeying for the Democratic nomination, which in this deep-blue county all but assures victory in the November general election.

Only one of the County Council’s four at-large members is running for reelection, and the openings have attracted a crowd. Seventeen candidates are vying for the four seats.

The race for three District 39 state delegate seats will be another one to watch. A team of incumbents has recruited a new candidate to join their campaign slate in an attempt to edge out their firebrand colleague.

And the county sheriff’s race emerged as especially contentious, with a challenger claiming the current sheriff has created a “toxic environment.”

The Banner has compiled a list that includes candidates who’ve filed with the State Board of Elections.

The primary will be held on June 23. Early voting runs from June 11 to June 18.
