Shooting near Towson University not connected to campus, police say

A shooting near Towson University prompted a campuswide shelter-in-place order Sunday evening.

The alert was lifted shortly before 10 p.m., nearly three hours after police responded to the shooting.

Baltimore County Police said the shooting was not connected to Towson University. Towson said the 18-year-old victim is not a student.

“We are able to say that this individual is not in any way related to Towson University, and we do not believe the shooting is related to anything in reference to Towson University,” Baltimore County Police Detective Trae Corbin said.

The alert to students said, “This is not a drill,” and instructed students to close and lock windows and doors.

“Report anything unusual to the police,” the alert said. “Await further direction from local authorities.”

Police responded to the shooting in the area of Cardiff Hall Apartments in the 8000 block of York Road near campus. Police said an 18-year-old man was found with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound near Campus View Drive and was taken to the hospital.

Corbin said several individuals have been detained, but no arrests have been made.

Authorities asked people to avoid the area so officers could “safely resolve this incident.”

“We will deploy resources and multiple units in the area to increase police presence around the area,” Corbin said.
