25 evacuated after Amtrak train car catches fire in Essex

Baltimore County crews responded Thursday evening to a fire on an Amtrak train car in Essex.

Crews responded at around 5:51 p.m. to a train that had stopped near Canberra Drive and Waterview Way, bringing a pause to train traffic.

At least 25 people were evacuated and at least two were treated for minor injuries, the fire department said in a social media post.

“We cannot confirm a cause of the fire at this time,” Kasey Thomas, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Fire Department, wrote in an email Thursday evening.

The department reported later that the fire had been extinguished by 6:30 p.m. and the evacuated passengers, including one with minor injuries, were returned to unaffected train cars.

The train continued to its next stop.
